History of Ceylon

  King Vijaya (483 – 445 BC)

Elsewhere  World history :-

484 – 425, Herodotus, considered the world's foremost historian, writes his book 'History of the Persian Wars'.

480, Second Persian War, Persian forces destroy Athens.  But the Greek forces defeat the Persian navy in a naval battle at Salamis.

On this day Buddha was on his death bed, told god Shakra, who was by his side,

"Prince Vijaya, the son of King Sinhabahu, who came from the country of Lala, landed at Lanka today with seven hundred men.  My religion will remain on that island, Lord God.  Therefore, protect him, his followers and that country," says the Mahawansa.

Hearing this, King Deva entrusted the protection of Sri Lanka to Lord Vishnu, who is colored like a Lotus flower.

The Mahavamsa says that immediately after this request  Lord Vishnu quickly came to Sri Lanka and disguised himself as an ascetic and stayed under a tree.  Vijaya's followers saw him

"Which island is this?"  they asked

This is the island of Lanka,” he replied.  “There are no people here, there is no danger”.  He said, sprinkled the blessed water  and tied blessed  thread on their hands and suddenly disappeared.  After this miracle, it is said that  a devil creature who was a follower of  Kuveni, the ruler  of that area, appeared in the form of a girl.

Although Prince Vijaya instructed his followers not to separate from the group, one of his disciples, thinking that 'if there is a dog there should be a human settlement nearby' followed the dog.

After he had gone some distance, he saw  Kuveni, the leader of the tribe, was weaving cotton under a tree looking like a  woman.  Vijaya's follower saw the pond there and went down to the pond to drink water and take a bath. He  picked lotus flowers from the  pond and took water for the lotus leaves and came out of the pond.  “You are my victim, stand  there,” she told him.

Then many strange things happened.  He was there like a stone.  It is said that she could not eat him because of the blessed thread  tied by  Lord Vishnu on his hand.  She asked him to take it off.  He didn't and  Kuvenia caught him and imprisoned him in a tunnel.

Thus all the 700 retinues followed one another and were imprisoned in the tunnel by Kuveni.  Suspecting danger when all his followers did not return, Prince Vijaya went to the pond armed with sword, bow and arrow, battle axe, spear and shield.  He saw that his followers had gone into the pond but had no footprints coming out.  He also saw the woman weaving.

"My followers are imprisoned by this woman”.  He guessed.

“Woman!  Have you seen my men?”  the prince asked her.

“Forget your followers and take a good bath, prince,” she replied.

.  "She  is a demon ( it appears that this group of people who are led by kuweni, all living off, salvaging cargo from merchants ships that founder in that area with many navigational hazards) otherwise how would she know that I am a prince?"  Thinking that, he suddenly screamed and jumped towards her with his bow.  He caught hold of the necklace around the demon's neck, then grabbed her by the hair with his left hand and drew the sword with his right hand,

"Give me back my men or I will kill you".  threatened her.

Terrified by this, Kuvenip pl asked him for her life.

"Give me the gift of life, I will give you the kingdom of Lankapura.  And I will give you all the services you need, including the services you should get from a woman”.

Suspecting that she would later change her word, he made her swear an oath.
