Lost in translation

the teacher who challenged the king ; history series 5

History series 5

Thus saved, prince goes back home to his foster father and  stays with him for another five years . And these people by whom the prince is brought up are called herdsmen. We cannot help but notice that  Chitra who was  a close confidence of Dhigagamini when he courted  princess Unmadachitra  and later killed for not helping her brothers was also a herdsman. Probably they are a different race of people living independently, east of Anuradapura. They seem to have something against the royal family. Otherwise who will dare to incur the wrath of the king by bringing up a marked boy so close to the capitol of the country?
After five years, secret is out again. Uncles learn that their attempt to eliminate their nephew has been an abortive one. He still lives. So they send another group of soldiers to finish him off. Prince on that day  had gone to jungle with a hunting party and they kill a deer and want to barbeque it. But they find that they have forgotten to bring fire or tools to light a fire. Prince would have been the youngest of the lot or the weakest, because he gets sent home to fetch the lamp. Since oil lamps were in use from 4500 BC and candles from 3000 BC  it would have been an oil lamp or a candle.
It must have been long walk, or prince doesn’t like the barbequed deer much. He tells his foster brother to take the fire to waiting hunting party. And he sweetens the offer by adding that he can partake in the roasted deer if he goes. Brother agrees and take the fire the waiting hunting party, the house couldn’t have been far, for the small children  go back and forth.
It was the last roasted deer for the party. King’s men surround them whist they were at it and wipe the group out. They had no way to know that their target had escaped again and go and tell their masters that mission had been accomplished.
This incident allows prince to continue his herdsmen life for another four years. Again his uncles discover him to be alive and his mother also comes to know that he has been discovered. She would have also known last two attempts on his life and even had some hand on saving him, so she sends 1000 gold coins to the foster father and asks him send  the son to a rich, learned Brahmin named Pandula. Foster father reveals the prince  the truth and sends him to Pandula in southern districts with the money and a slave.
Prince go to Pandulagama , where the Brahmin reside and  Pandula can see he would be a king one day and teachers him and Pandula’s  son Chandra, whatever subjects that a future king should become master of. Now strangely  uncles don’t disturb him anyway , neither make any further attempts at his life. Either the Brahmin appears too powerful for them to challenge his protection  or this infant kingdom of new settlers doesn’t have the authority beyond present day north central province.
The prince proves to be a diligent and hardworking student. In a short period he masters all the subjects the Brahmin has to offer.

මෑත කාලයේ ඉතාමත් ජනප්‍රිය වූ lord of the rings චිත්‍රපට හය, Avatar, Tin Tin සහ last Samurai චිත්‍රපට ගත කෙරුනේ නවසීලන්තයේය.

Unmada Chitra ; Princess who drove men mad and uncles even madder

Panduwasdewa ( 444 BC – 414BC) takes the reign and continues the laissez-faire style rule of, his predecessor, king Vijaya; highly decentralized settlements under his ministers in and around Anuradapura. Perhaps Anuradapura is  gradually  coming into prominence among the settlements but Panduwasdewa doesn’t want to shift his seat of government, he continues from Thambapanni.
He has ten sons and a daughter. The probability for the daughter to have next heir to throne is almost non-existent, but truth is stranger than fiction, that’s what happens.
When she is born soothsayers predicts that her son will kill his uncles and sit on the throne of the kingdom. Brothers wanted to kill her to preempt this, but the eldest son  and the parents   find a compromise. They build a single pillar  chamber  without an entrance other than the single door through the king’s bed chamber. Since this looks much better alternative to killing their little sister brothers agree. Reminds one of Rapunzel and mother Gothel in the Disney movie , well the similarities end here. The princess lives with one solitary maid in the tower and 100 soldiers guarding her from without, but something magical happens.
Princess Chitra become known as  Unmada Chitra because she   in love with a son of Dighayu , one of her uncles  who came and settled in Srilanka after her mother found her way into Srilanka and got married to Panduwasdew and became the queen of the land. This son, Dhigagamini having heard of Unmada Chitra, come to the capitol  , and king appoints him to the staff of vice regent , prince Abhaya.
Dhiga Gamini climbs into the one pillar chamber with the help of a hook ladder and after sometime the princess becomes pregnant.
This time father come to rescue and suggest that they should  marry her to the prince, the father of the child and kill the infant if he happens to be  a boy. Princes agree but kill the two confidants  of  Dhigagamini , herdsman  chitra and slave kalawela when they realize those two will work against them. Though the book doesn’t say anything about Dighagamini he never even once appears in Mahawamsa again, even during the formative years of the prince or when princes for many years waging a war against the uncles.
A son is born but princess with the help of her trusted maid manages to switch prince with a newborn girl from the nearby village to save him for first couple of days and then send him to a man in village near Mihinthale, whose wife has given birth to a child that day. Man tells his neighbors that his wife had twins and brings up the prince with his own son. He is named  Pandukabaya by mother and grand mother.
Prince seems a very active guy and has many tricks up in his sleeves to confuse his playmates. One of them involves a hollow of a tree underwater in a lake. Prince when he is playing with his friends in the village lake (there had been many lakes before settlers start building them) goes into water creep into that hollow of the tree underwater and stay in the hollow and surprise his playmates by pretending he has been underwater all this time.
This trick comes to his rescue when his uncles after learning that prince is still alive send a team of assassins to kill their mysterious nephew. He jumps into the lake with his cloths on and hides in the usual place when assassins slay all his friends who were in the lake naked, count the bodies and compare the number with the cloths and confirm that all the children have been killed. They go and report this to the uncles. Luckily for the prince he had jumped into lake with cloths on. Otherwise there would have been further investigations by assassins because the number of bodies is  one less than the number of set of cloths.

peaceful transition of power ; does this land pacify ?

Meanwhile having being  consecrated, king Vijaya is looking forward to establish a royal line that will reign Srilanka forever, until the sun and moon remain in the sky, to borrow a phrase for time frame, from  the language of the rock inscriptions. But it doesn’t happen that way. King Vijaya has no children, many  superstitious people, that was the norm those days of course, like nowadays, would have thought it was a result of a curse , curse of the estranged Kuweni , who was used ,duped of her possessions and  discarded like a skin of a banana ,not because of a  fault of her, but because of the circumstances which are not under  her control even in remotest.

Now since he has no royal issues to continue his blood line, king Vijaya think of his own royal family in northern India, far away, almost 2/3rd of the peninsula away, from his wife’s people. Now a question arises in the mind of reader as to the previous decision of him and his ministers to send so much treasure at the beginning and annual tribute worth 200000 golds to king of Madura( 200 times gold that king Vijaya promised  to spend on the puja to deities on behalf of Kuweni) , in south India for his royal bride. Under these circumstances the oblivious choice would have been to send the messengers to their own people in north India, when they were looking for a bride from a royal blood line in India, but they don’t even discuss this obvious alternative.
Reason for Deciding on south India Could be
geo-political compulsions
For  ensuring the safety of the infant nation from the attacks of the tribe which was waiting to take revenge on the most un- cavalier     night attack perpetuated on them with inside help; like buying an insurance.

On the other hand was the marriage forced upon them by king of Madura? Because such a large annual tribute, paid in pearls, the most valuable produce of the country, smacks of a relationship between an overlord and a tributary; not a usual exchange of gifts between two friendly monarchs.
Anyway when the messengers arrive in Sinhapura, in present day Bengal like Vijaya himself, his brothers have grown old. And king wishes one of his sons to go to Srilanka, he says to his sons `I am old, dear ones; one of you must depart for the greatly favoured and beauteous Lañkä belonging to my brother, and there, after his death, assume,  that fair kingdom.’probably learned from the messengers of the richness of Srilanka. His youngest son prince Panduwasdew  either because he is  more adventurous than his siblings or because he doesn’t have any chance of succession after his father to the throne of Sinhapura, volunteers.

Unlike previous emigration from South India, which was almost an exodus , this is much more sober affair ;few people moving at leisurely pace, incognito, because  of some reason that’s not explained. Mahawamsa however includes a proof that the prince who arrives is the prince who left Sinhapura by introducing a soothsayer who predicts to the minister who has been assigned by other ministers for the purpose , that the prince who is expected will arrive in Thambapanni within a week.

After arrival of Vijaya and his followers in Srilanka their behavior changes completely. We must not forgot that this is a band of brothers who have been deported for crimes against their own citizenry, crimes so grave that the citizen come to king and demand that his son, the eldest who usually inherits throne, be condemned to death. Whole group is saved from death because of the royal connection. And when their ship land in an island close to Supparaka the seaport from which they depart , this group creates more violence and thrown out from that island too.

So this is a group that has violence in their blood, but after arriving at Thambapanni they change so much, they look like a different group altogether. One glaring example is the transition of power from Vijaya to Panduwasdev , his nephew .Vijaya dies long  before the arrival of his nephew , and one of his ministers , Upathissa , rules the kingdom in interim for a period of about an year.  The way that ministers adore power, one would expect minister Upathissa to develop a strong taste for power during that period and resist handing over of the government to a total stranger, who only has a family connection to his former master.  But he doesn’t, the transition of power was carried out in total peace. Does this land pacify ?

Death of Kuweni ; continues from earlier blog , first lady

Her pleas fall on the deaf year, prince Vijaya  , who has been the de facto king anyway insist on having the princes from royal blood line and Kuweni realizes that there  is no future for her and their children in Thambapanni. She decides to leave , probably after she learns that the south Indian entourage is already on the way .   Like any estranged woman Kuweni doesn’t want to leave the children, despite the request from Vijaya to leave the children with him.
Kuweni takes the children and go to Lankapura , the town hence  the prince for the ill fated wedding came, when she and Vijaya  led the attack on the wedding celebrations, wiping out all of them. She was going into a certain death.  But she would have thought she could extract some leniency from her relatives. But to be on the safe side she doesn’t take the children into the city, she leaves them outside city walls, near the entrance.
For the Yakkas she is a traitor, no doubt in that, but the danger is greater here for her  because they , obviously suspect that she has come to spy on them to complete the betrayal, started in Shirshawasthu Pura, where the wedding massacre took place.
While she was talking to the city elders, a violent one, perhaps a angry relative of a Yakka who has been killed in Shirshawasthu  Pura, come to her and kills her with one fatal blow.
The children wait for mother outside the city , not knowing her fate , but perhaps suspecting the danger she would face in the city among her people who have been betrayed by her because of her love to their father , a handsome prince from faraway lands.
An uncle of kuweni leaves the city for some errand and sees these two children, alone, waiting for her mother, and suspect them to be the children of kuweni and ask them. The Yakkas by this time would have come to know that kuweni has two children from Vijaya and also children would have looked different, because their father ,coming from the stocks of pure Indo-Aryans  must have looked like a European.
Uncle after confirming from them that they are the children of kuweni, tell them to flee without wasting any moment, that their mother had been killed inside the city. This news would have confirmed their suspicions, that the worst had happened and they take flight. Like many other royals fleeing from enemy after they have defeated by enemy, after them,  they escape to central mountains, live in jungles near Samanala Parwatha and lay foundation to a Pulinda  people, most probably present aborigines people known as Veddas. They receive royal grant from king of the mountains to live in those jungles as a separate group of people.
Prince Vijaya meanwhile crowns himself king of lanka but Mahawamsa makes no mention of whether he conquered the Lankapura or negotiated an agreement to cohabit with Yakkas because they don’t appear in the book until Pandukabaya ,  about 100 years later.

First ,first lady of the nation ; an intriguing beginning , History series 1

In  year 483 BC, prince Vijaya with 700 followers land on the beach of the western coast, most likely somewhere between Mannar and Puttalam, having left  a port somewhere in Mumbai ,( ancient port of Supparaka ,present district of Supparaka in  state of Maharashta) in the western coast in India. They must have been dog tired after a long journey in a small ship. They couldn’t have been provided with lots of food and luxuries because from the last port of call, because  they were thrown out from there  in a hurry with some violence.
When they land in this coast they would have passed ¾th  of islands length from south to north keeping the land on their right side. And they would have seen the luxurious growth of flora from the distance and even small settlements along the coast. Either because of the unpleasant experience they had at the last port of call or they were looking for a land which is uninhabited to establish a entirely new settlement like prince Vijaya’s  father , prince Sinhabahu did they don’t come and land in first foreign land they see.
They see the coast north of Puttalam, pristine beaches with no human settlements or they see that they have come to an impasse in a form of sand banks across the sea and have no alternative but to land. They land and they must have been dog- tired, like in many stories of ship wreck they go to sleep on the beach itself , carefree because they don’t see any settlements.
One man wakes up and although he had been told to not to go out without permission he ventures out, after seeing a dog and thinking sensibly that there can’t be dogs moving around , if there is no human settlement nearby.
Probably a group of people from a small tribe of who have been outcast from the main tribe are watching this strange group of people who are much fairer and more sophistically dressed than they are. Also with a strange hair style, because Sinhabahu had their heads half shaven, before putting them on board ship for deportation.
700 young men is a large band of fighting men. It would have been  a 1/4th of a  brigade in present day terms. But they were tired and had no local knowledge. Despite all the magic spells and rhetoric included later in  Mahawamsa , I think they are taken, one by one without a fight. But luckily for the new arrivals the leader of the tribe is a young woman. And it was love at first sight, she falls in love with handsome Vijaya and the marriage is consumed in the same night under a tree, to seal the bond.
Before the nightfall young leader of the tribe, Kuweni shows Vijaya much wealth they have accumulated from ships. There was a thriving sea trade those days between India and Europe, many ships must have been plying closer to Mannar in and out of India. And rough seas in this hazardous stretch of passage would have led to many mishaps, including ship wrecks.  So this wealth is also transferred to coffers of the new nation.
She knew that a royal wedding is taking place in few days in a nearby city of her people, and she apparently has not been invited. She keeps her newfound army a secret and attacks the city at night when wedding party is at full swing, killing most of them. Prince Vijaya takes the dresses of ruler of the city and distribute other wealth. That shows that they are fairly decent guys whose dresses were good enough for the most developed societies at the time; as they say cloths make the man.
Now anybody would expect Vijaya and Kuweni to settle  in the city they conquered and rule the country that supported the city. It doesn’t happen that way, Vijaya and Kuweni return back to their original place of dwelling and live there.
Yakkas of Lankapura, the city from which the ill fated bridegroom came, doesn’t do anything after this disaster; in fact city is never mentioned in Mahawamsa after this episode.  Now after their two children grow up , when they are like ten years old , ministers want Vijaya , who has been de facto king anyway to crown himself king. Vijaya agrees but with one condition; that he should have a proper princes springing from a royal blood line.
Ministers, who send messengers to   their former kingdom when they want a prince to succeed Vijaya , send massive haul of wealth  to a king in Madurapura , a kingdom in south India; in fact closest south Indian kingdom to Srilanka  in india. Doesn’t it sound like a kings ransom?.

Vijaya meanwhile begs Kuweni to leave him leaving the children with him; he even promises him that he will pay 1000 golds to conduct a puja for the Kuweni, As if he knows that she is going to die in the hands of Yakkas , when he let her go.

The French connection at Trincomalee

The French connection at Trincomalee

The onslaught of western maritime powers which began around 1505 in Sri Lanka continued in varying intensities until 1815 when the Sinhalese   signed an agreement with British Empire for the governance of mountain kingdom.

Portuguese and Dutch occupations of parts of Maritime Provinces lasted close to 150 years each. At the end, in 1815 British by use of force, diplomacy and intrigue were able to end 300 years of resistance of the last Sinhalese kingdom led by Kandyan Kings.

The activities of those three maritime empires in Sri-Lanka are well known among us. However two attempts by the French to come and establish themselves in Sri-Lanka are not as known and remain in shrouds of mystery. It is interesting to note that both these French attempts took place in and around Trincomalee; the second biggest and deepest natural harbour in the world. The first attempt took place in 22nd March 1672 when a French fleet commanded by Admiral De La Haye appeared off Ceylon and cast anchor in the bay of ‘Thirikunamale’. When they arrived at Trincomalee the Dutch who were controlling some parts of Maritime Provinces at the time had a small fort in Trincomalee. The sudden appearance of French fleet disconcerted the Hollanders. They set fire to their fort and retired. The French having seeing the hasty departure of Dutch, occupied the two islands centrally located within the Trincomalee harbour and started building fortifications. The two islands were named by French as Isle by Soleil (island of the sun) and Caron. Since the British period the islands are known as Sober islands.

At the time, the king of Kandy was Rajasinghe II (1629 to Dec 1687) and he was at war with the Dutch. King Rajasinghe, fortunately for the French, was looking for a maritime power to assist him to cut off Dutch reinforcements coming to Sri Lanka whilst he was engaged in fighting Dutch on land.

Admiral De La Haye sent an emissary with 30 French soldiers to Kandyan courts to negotiate with the king. Sieur Desfon Taines, the emissary was treated so graciously in Kandy he decided not to return, and settled down in Kandy. Instead two court officials accompanied by several thousand men arrived at Trincomalee and were entertained on board ships by French.  Few days after the return of court officials thousands of men arrived from Kandy to assist the work in fortification. Within two months of arrival of French, a treaty was signed between king Rajasinghe and the French, granting approval for French to build fortification for the control of Trincomalee harbour. Shortly afterwards governor of Dutch processions in Ceylon, Van Goen arrived with a Dutch fleet to oppose the French presence in Trincomale.

At this juncture the French position was menacing. More than 400 French soldiers were suffering from dysentery resulting from exposure to the intense sun and were being treated by the 12 physicians sent by king of Kandy. There was a serious shortage of fresh provisions and French could not find adequate supplies, especially meat, for this large body of men. Dutch meanwhile landed some troops close by in an attempt to cut off supplies from the interior. Kandyan troops engaged Dutch soldiers but French did not join the Kandyan troops in this battle claiming that they are formally at peace with Netherland.

The Kandyan enthusiasm for their newfound ally suffered greatly because of this apparent contradiction.  Two ships the French sent to south India to succour supplies were captured by the Dutch fleet making French position even more perilous. The diseases and the lack of food resulted in many deaths and Admiral Haye decided to leave Trincomalee leaving just 100 men in the fortification and two vessels at anchor. No sooner main fleet left Trincomalee Dutch attacked that position and remaining French troops were forced to surrender. A large army from Kandy came to Trincomalee but they were late by two days. So the French ambitions to build a trading empire in India with Trincomalee as its base and Sinhalese dream of getting rid of Dutch from Sri-Lanka with the assistance of another maritime power, were both lost in 3 months

The second incident of French appearance that took place after 110 years after the attempt by Admiral Haye, is as interesting as the previous incident and as short lived as well.

From the beginning French had tacitly helped Americans in the war of independence. In 1778 they openly declared against British by signing the treaty of alliance with USA. Because of this open declaration, British in India captured French strong holds including Pondichary.  In order to support their positions and of their allies, Dutch, France   sent 12 ships under the command of Rear admiral Andre De suffren. After several skirmishes against British ships, his fleet join with another French squadron that increased the strength of the fleet to 11 ships of the line and several transports carrying nearly 3000 troops. In the overall command of the Combined fleet was Admiral D’ Estinene – D Orves. This elderly Admiral died on board leaving the fleet under the direct command of Suffren.

The fleet sailed to Madras and met with British squadron commanded by Admiral Edward Hughes. French fleet engaged British squadron off Madras in the ‘battle of Sadras’. After the engagement Suffren was able to safely disembark the French troops in the Indian soil. After meeting Hyder Ali, the ruler of Mysore Suffren led his fleet to Trincomalee, in pursuit of British squadron which had sailed for Trincomalee.

Two fleets met in April 1782 off the Island of Providian (probably present Chalaithivu island near Vakarai, south of Trincomalee). Broadsides were engaged from noon to nightfall. After the nightfall Hughes returned to Trincomalee and Suffren anchored at Baticaloa which was still under the control of Dutch and remained there for six weeks to repair and replenish.

Next engagement took place off Nagapatnam when French fleet attempted to capture the coastal town of Nagapatnam. In this encounter, a storm scatted both the battered fleets, half way through the engagement, without a decision. The high point of the campaign took place in 1782 when Suffren together with another small French squadron that had joined him entered Trincomalee and landed 2400 French troops. After being bombarded for three days by French, British garrison Commander, Captain McDowell surrendered Trincomalee to French on 31 August 1782. Suffren fortified the garrison and waited for Admiral Hughes fleet. Fleet appeared in September as expected  and after the engagement between two fleets, known as the ‘battle of Trincomalee’ in the annals of maritime warfare , two  fleets broke away and took shelter; British in Bombay and French in Indonesia, because  of the onset of northeast  monsoon.

In 1783 with the beginning of southwest monsoon Suffren returned to India and engaged the British fleet off Cuddalore inflicting sufficient damage to force Admiral Hughes to withdraw to Madras. This happened to be the last engagements between the fleets of Suffren and Admiral Hughes since French and British signed an article of peace to end hostilities in the sub continent

French handed back Trincomalee to Dutch East India Company (VOC) at the peace of Paris in 1784 and in 1795 it was taken over by British

So ended the second attempt by the French to establish a permanent foot hold in Trincomalee; two brief but colourful and eventful occupations. Of the two admirals, Suffren, considered perhaps the ablest naval commander French ever produced, returned to France where he was enthusiastically received. He was made vice Admiral of French fleet in 1781 and later was killed in a duel, by the prince Du Mirepoix. The course of the encounter apparently had been saffron’s refusal in very strong language to use his influence to secure the restoration to the Navy of two of the prince’s relations who had been dismissed for misconduct.

Hughes returned to England after the peace agreement. Although he was promoted to higher positions he never hoisted his flag on a ship again. He lived a rich man from the wealth he accumulated from his Indian service and died in 1774.

1. India had been pressing Sri Lanka to have the U.S. system moved to Sri Lanka's southern coast and install an Indian-provided system. Illangakoon told us the Sri Lanka Navy Commander had instructed him to hold firm that the U.S.-provided coastal radars should be installed in the north, if necessary over Indian objections. 2. (C) Commodore Illangakoon reported that during his meeting in New Delhi, the Indian Navy Commander said India is no longer pressing Sri Lanka to move the U.S. provided coastal radars to the south, and the radar installation may proceed as planned. India also plans to provide additional radars to Sri Lanka.
