Maha Vamsaya is an anthology of Sasana history of Buddhism and  history of Srilanka.  It was written in Pali[1] language.  This dates back to the history of Sri Lanka from the time of King Vijaya in 543 BC to King Mahasen in 304 AD.

Chapters one to five of Mahawamsa cover the history of Buddhism in India, from the Buddha's passing to the end of the Third Dharma Sangayana.

It is said that the Mahanama Thera compiled this collection in the fifth century AD during the reign of King Dhatusena, which contained many documents from the third century BC in the Great Temple, the Maha vihara  of Anuradhapura.

It is composed in poetic language as an epic in a way that is easy to remember.  The book was translated into English in 1837 by Ceylon Civil Service officer and historian George Turnor[2], Mahawamsa was translated into German in 1912 by Dr. Wilhelm Geiger[3], an expert on Indian, Iranian and Sri Lankan history.  He was also an expert in Pali, Sinhala and Divehi (the Maldivian language).

Then Miss Dr. Mabel Haynes Bode[4], an Englishwoman who had mastered Pali and Sanskrit languages, along with Dr. Wilhelm Geiger, translated Mahavamsa from German into English.  Then it was edited by an expert committee appointed under the chairmanship of Mr. T. W. Rhys Davids, an oriental language expert at the expense of the government, at that time.

This work is based on Geiger's edited work and it  is expected to give details to the reader only regarding the history of Sri Lanka.  Therefore, religious details that are not directly related to the state history of Sri Lanka are not included here.  But naturally, I  had to include such details as felt essential to the flow of the story and its content.

.1] Magadha, a Middle Indo-Aryan language, is used today because the scriptures of Theravada and some Hindu religions are written in this language.

[2] An English civil servant, he died at the age of 44 after translating the first 38 chapters.

[3] Wilhelm Ludwig Geiger (1856–1943) A German scholar well versed in the Indo-Iranian languages of the East and the history of India and Sri Lanka.  He was also a scholar of Pali, Sinhala and Diva (the language of the Mala Islands).

[4] (1864–1922) One of the first Western women to enter the study of Pali Sanskrit and Buddhism.  The first woman to publish an article in the Journal of the Royal Asiatic Society
